8-A-SIDE T20 LMS WINTER COMPETITION EASTERN SYDNEY DIVISION 5, SUNDAY 2 AUGUST 2020

ROUND 3: C.C.N.S.W.  v  ‘TOEY GAMBLERS’  at ROBERTSON ROAD MOORE PARK MP4 ON SUNDAY 2 AUGUST 2020: REPORT BY JIM HADLEY

(Back row L to R ) Graham Buck, Martin Speiser, Tom Speiser, Jim Hadley (c) and (w), Luke Holman.

(Front row)  David Craig, Richard Clark (v/c), Mick Tarrant.

Winning the toss I elected to bowl (a Peter Rolls induced strategy). Graham Buck started well but found some solid thick edges through cover hard to defend. Tom Speiser again this week was unlucky to be snicked through first and third slip for early boundaries until having the oppositions best batsmen trapped in front with an outswinger starting on leg stump. Mick Tarrant and Luke Holman took over with Mick being an absolute handful for the opposition, swinging the ball prodigiously. Any runs that came off him were generally thick edges at best. Luke got slapped straight early but reconfigured his length quickly to keep things tight till David Craig came on, to bowl his three overs of flighted leg spin with good control. He was  unlucky not to have a keeper who could take advantage of him continually beating the bat. Martin Speiser and Richard Clark bowled the final 4 overs (‘thuggery time’) and got us off the field in what we all considered reasonable shape needing 160 plus for victory.

Richard Clark and Tom Speiser knew there was a lot riding on their efforts at the top of the order as the opposition had two decent opening bowlers to negotiate but after the first four overs with some lusty shots from Clark and good calling and running by Speiser, we had already knocked 40 off the total. Tom played for spin to a ball that stayed straight and was unfortunately bowled bringing David Craig to the crease. David looked confident after a few deliveries and decided to charge their spinner and became our second casualty (stumped). Luke Holman took up with Clarke and played perfectly, cutting and pulling early fours then surrendering early singles in the over to keep Clark on strike. Clark’s innings was retired in his 50s leaving us ahead on the run rate and the opposition devoid of a frontline bowler. Mick Tarrant and Holman continued on, unfortunately finding fielders to superbly timed drives but still keeping the run rate where we needed it to be. When Tarrant and Holman left the crease we were in great shape to finish our opponents off and Martin Speiser did just that pulling two fours and a six  off the last  four balls of the last over to get us home.

Our bowlers will have learnt a lot from this outing as we ran into some big young burly keen eyed lads with agricultural ways. Our batting highlighted by Richard Clark’s innings is brimming with composure and belief and we can’t wait for our next opposition.
