MASTERS OVER 40s ROUND 1  v  LANE COVE AT CAMPERDOWN OVAL, CAMPERDOWN ON SUNDAY 31 OCTOBER 2021 : REPORT BY ANDREW DADSWELL

A fine cool day greeted players at Camperdown to kick start the 2020/21 Masters season. The precise cover folding set an early benchmark for the season unlike the pre-match fielding practice. Some of the boys looked the part in their new long sleeved shirts.

Before the start of play both teams observed a minute of silence in memory of one of Lane Cove’s teammates who played his last game of cricket at Camperdown last season. We send our sincere condolences to the Lane Cove Cricket Club.

Skipper Ian Allmey won the toss and sent in the opposition.

Lane Cove got off to a solid start before Mick Tarrant grabbed his first wicket in the fifth over. Gill (40) and John (28) played some nice shots and survived a couple of tough chances to take Lane Cove to 1 for 82 at the halfway mark with Lee Witherden (4-0-25-0) and Ben Stanic (8-1-29-0) keeping the run rate in check.

After the drinks break the game moved forward as McLeod (41) scored quickly but when Jose Poothokaren (4.1-0-24-2) and David Craig (8-1-44-2) went to work the pendulum started to swing CCNSW’s way. The wickets fell at a steady rate as Dadswell (7-0-31-2) and Tarrant (8-0-30-3) kept the momentum going.

Lane Cove ended up all out for 188 in the final over of their innings. A good score but with a very fast outfield the boys were confident it wouldn’t be enough.

The run chase got off to a solid start with ‘Jono’ Shaw taking to his new role as opener before being adjudged caught behind. We found ourselves at 2 for 39 after 9 overs when Dan Turner had a rare low score.Only one more wicket would fall from this point on as Mike Weaver and Scott Wells both played several nice drives and pull shots on their way to respective retirements.

Weaves’ innings was a master class in Camperdown batting, mixing defence with attack to lay the platform. There was one nervous moment as Scotty was bowled off a full toss that was called no ball. It was suggested that it would’ve been deemed a legal delivery against any other batter in the line-up. That didn’t hold him up on his way to retirement which was punctuated by a thumping pull shot off the tricky bowling of McLeod.

The skipper smacked one to the boundary before being caught in pursuit of quick runs. When Jose Poothokaren joined Lee Witherden at the crease it was fireworks. Lee had his cut shot working like a charm and Jose hit the ball to all parts of the ground. A great combination of attacking batting meant we started to think about bonus points. Jose became the third batter to retire with a stand and deliver pull shot.

Mick Tarrant finished off his great all-round game with a four and six to pass the Lane Cove total with 12 overs to spare.

A great start to the season. Skipper Allmey pulled all the right strings, and an enjoyable day was had by all. Thanks also to Luke Holman for supporting the team and scoring. Highlights of the run chase can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTVgvf2PE9U

VINTAGE OVER 60s ROUND 1 v GEORGES RIVER AT BLAND OVAL, RIVERWOOD ON SUNDAY 31 OCTOBER 2021 : REPORT BY PETER ROLLS

Nice 21°C day to start our 2021-22 campaign. No one looked like they had put on “Lockdown” kilos!

CCNSW won the toss and sent Georges River in to bat on a well grassed but rolled hard wicket which played mostly true with the odd jagger.

Joe Scarcella  started us off with his striking Coogee Covid lockdown suntan that Flavio would have been proud of. Joe showed good pace resulting from his pandemic net practices (‘cause nothing else to do!).  Paul Georgiadis at the other end with 3 maidens in 4 overs was more miserly than a current travel agent.

Both openers hit some fine shots but not picking up the singles due to some good fielding, especially from “Rabbit Legs” Frank Balliotis who covered more ground than a Covid nurse. He also took a fine catch in the deep off Stuart Ridge to get Peter Remfrey.

After 8 overs Stuart Ridge  had came on to instant success on his second ball with a ‘jaffa’ that cut back off a good length and took danger man Alan Wright’s middle stump. Latter Wright said he should have taken up Joe’s offer for a net session at Maroubra with Stu!

Stu’s 4th and 5th over wicket maidens broke the hearts of their top order and then Sittampalam Ragavan (‘Raga’) and Mick McCormick came on to consolidate with good tight spells and Mick a wicket in his first over bowling under 60 danger man Smith and Raga in his second over getting captain Mick Collins caught behind well gloved by David Wright standing up to the stumps. After the game David’s body was looking for an injection that you can’t get from a Covid clinic!

From there they struggled to get momentum and both spinners. Jim Robson (‘Jungles’) and Ajoy  Roy bamboozled them with flight and variety and both picked up a well deserved wicket each. Joe Scarcella and Paul Georgiadis finished off the session to have them 8 for 128 off 40 overs.

Needing only 3 an over the captain’s call was for a restrictive batting approach but this was adhered to like a Victorian quarantine hotel managed by rent-a-guard! Both Raga and Ajoy Roy playing their shots and after 5 overs, were travelling at 4 an over. Ajoy was the  first to go in the sixth over with a skied on drive caught on the boundary. Raga departed a couple of overs latter from a slick run out. Both did a fine job of taking the shine off the ball for Garry Winney and Peter Rols who ran some quick singles and the odd boundary to stay ahead of the run rate.

Garry retiring with his best innings in Over 60’s Vintage cricket – amazing for a 70yo! Peter soon retired and Jungles and Greg Brooks continued the onslaught until Greg nicked one behind off a spinner and Frank Balliotis had one go through the gate like a weary traveller returning to his house after quarantine.

With 5 overs to spare Mick McCormick and Jungles finished them off like leftover Pfizer jabs for walk-in vaxers.

A solid win with everyone contributing and enjoyable banter with GR after the game.
