C.C.N.S.W. MATCH  REPORT No 12: HUNTERS HILL AND THE SCG XI – SUNDAY 30 JANUARY  2022

CITY & SUBURBAN  ROUND 10 v HUNTERS HILL PIRATES AT BORONIA PARK, HUNTERS HILL ON SUNDAY 30 JANUARY 2022: REPORT BY HARRY BRIDGE

Conditions at Hunters Hill were promising with the driest bounciest pitch of the year; however the slow spongy outfield still indicated a low scoring encounter.

We started dramatically with the first ball to Gerry O’Shea – looping up to be easily taken by square leg – controversially determined to be a bump ball. The openers edgily saw off a few overs of tight bowling, with O’Shea weathering a bit of chin music and lifting one over first slip for 4, whilst Harry Bridge then ducked another short ball only for it to balloon up and fall down into his shoulder, giving the first signs of the variable bounce.

A few wickets fell in quick succession before Paul Nash steadied the innings with a determined watchful start, supported by promising new joiner Tim Litherland to take us through to drinks. An innocuous ‘dobbly’ outswinger was miscued twice shortly after drinks leading to easy catches, which then brought Tom Robertson in who made a strong start to push the scoreboard along nicely with Nash before the opening bowler returned and found Robertson’s off-stump while he tried to lift another ball over covers.

Nash now had his eye in and pondered what a winning total would be. He accelerated the innings quickly alongside Toby Forbes, both deciding that lofted shots were needed to overcome the slow outfield (and exhausting running in the heat), with a flurry of boundaries before the other opener returned and bowled Nash to end his impressive innings of 79. Forbes and Matt Leong then finished well, running energetically between wickets to push the total up to a more than respectable 9-164.

Our bowlers started strongly with Avi Bhandari maintaining sustained pressure and gaining two well-deserved wickets, whilst Tim Litherland’s off-spin tied down an end and kept the Pirate’s key batsman in check. Mike Tarrant meanwhile, who had been eagerly warming up in the field since the first over, was finally given the nod sometime around the 20th over – just as the Pirates were feeling the pressure and attempting to up their run-rate. Tarrant found his stride quickly and his tight bowling and unerring length proved far too good for the Pirates, as he claimed 3 wickets in one over and finished with 5-11, three bowled and a couple of well-caught catches by Nick Leong at mid-on to see the Pirates all out for 104 and our C&S team taking some good momentum into the Jack Pace Quarter Final this coming Sunday.
